Account types and choosing your playstyle XYG8
Welcome to Taskman! Before you get into the tutorial, let's figure out how you wish to use the site. You can play as a Taskman or a main. The next task will tell you more about the difference. Click 'Complete task', then generate a new task.
This is a Taskman BERR
A Taskman must be a new/unprogressed non-GIM ironman account. A Taskman follows the rules and only progresses their account according to their task. This tutorial will cover the key things you need to know as a Taskman. You can always convert to a (Task)main, but your account cannot become a Taskman if you've played it as a main. On the next task, you will learn what a (Task)main is. click "Complete task" and generate the next task.
This is a (Task)main MGWX
If you do not wish to follow the rules, or if you're not a fresh ironman account, you're a (Task)main. You can use the site and follow the rules (or not) however you want. You can select types of task to roll and regenerate tasks you don't want to do - including the tutorial tasks. Click "Complete task" and generate the next task to make your decision.
Make your choice ZVB9
If you wish to play as a Taskman complete this task and generate a new one. You are now a Taskman. Welcome! If you wish to play as a (Task)main, go to settings (click your username) and press the big red button "Click here to become a Taskmain". You now have free reign. Welcome!
Before we enter Gielinor 9692
This tutorial is intended to take you through the most fundamental rules of Taskman. In the following section, you roll a task and complete an action in the game. Your next task will provide you with context for the task or rule it showcased. Once you have done everything a task asks of you, press "Complete task" and generate a new one.
Complete Tutorial Island K3WE
Welcome to Gielinor, adventurer!
The first step on any new Runescape account is the Runescape tutorial. Simple and straightforward, complete the Tutorial Island. Once you've made it to the mainland, hit the complete task button. If you skipped the tutorial, or are passed this point, sorry but there's no going back. Complete the task anyway.
Prove yourself a pristine Taskman NKN6
Speak to Nastroth in Lumbridge castle courtyard and toggle the option "I want to prove I've never used an XP block/reset". Once you have toggled the option, roll your next task.
Context of "Prove yourself a pristine Taskman" 4G7Q
In this task, you had to travel to a new location. How you choose to do so is only limited to what you have access to in that moment. You can activate lodestones as you come upon them. Experience gain is our primary tracker of progress. Therefore, Taskmen are not allowed to disable stats or experience gain. This is established in rule §2.R4.
Find out your account's age and enter it in the D(ay)/H(our) fields NKD6
Hans in Lumbridge castle can tell you how old your account is. You can also find it in RuneMetrics. Our leaderboard uses your account's age to calculate your average time per task. Entering the time is optional, though.
Familiarise yourself with the site JW2B
Some tasks have icons; you can hover over them to learn what they are. The boxes to the right of your task, the cats and birds, rotate daily. These are relevant for passive tasks. More on that later. The top of the page has the rules, completed tasks history and leaderboard. Check them out. Once you've navigated around the site, come back by clicking on "Taskman" or "Dashboard" in the top left, and complete your task.
Cook a shrimp on a range in Lumbridge Y4N6
You can obtain the shrimp from fishing in east Lumbridge Swamp. Cook the Shrimp on a range in the buildings south of the castle.
Context of "Cook a shrimp on a range in Lumbridge" R9BM
This game has some really pointless achievements. You can tell there is an achievement because of the Runescore icon below the description. Did you notice your task completed an achievement that works towards the Beginner Lumbridge tasks? Area achievements are often completed during other tasks, and that's ok (rule 2.E3). You also had to find another range than the one in the Castle, as using that is locked behind a quest - if you check rule 2.R1, it states you have to use methods you already have access to - hence the other range.
Obtain Kayle's Chargebow EE6D
Kayle's Chargebow can be obtained during the "The Blood Pact" quest. Obtaining the chargebow does not finish the quest. However, if you look at rule 7, you'll see it says the following: §7 QUESTS. You can only start a quest or miniquest when it is required for your active task. While questing…
Exception 1. You are allowed to finish any quest your task has forced you to start.
This means that you may finish The Blood Pact quest, if you wish. You are also allowed to complete your task now, and wait for another task to force you to complete the quest. Look through the restrictions and exceptions of rule §7, too. The knowledge might come in handy.
Context of "Obtain Kayle's Chargebow" Y8KG
Okay. Now you have the Chargebow, great. You also have a partially completed quest, but if you look at rule 7.E1, you'll see it says "You are allowed to finish any quest your task has forced you to start." This means that you may finish The Blood Pact quest, if you wish. You can also decide to move onto the next task, and instead wait for another task to force you to complete the quest.
Register a total of 1 unique item in the Asgarnia and Misthalin section of your Slayer collection log ZD7Z
Click on your task's drop-down menu. The four items shown here can complete your task. It's up to you which one to go for and which combat style (you have access to) to use. The number in the parenthesis is the Slayer level required to harm the monster that drops the item. In the KC field, you can enter the # of kills it took you to obtain the unique. You can track the number of bones you get through RuneMetrics or your experience gain. Speaking of bones, you're allowed to bury them as you obtain them. You can also bank them to use at an Altar or the Ectofunctus.
Context of "Register a total of 1 unique item in the Asgarnia and Misthalin section of your Slayer collection log" 8W9W
Well done. You got yourself your first collection log item. On your journey you will eventually complete the Slayer collection log. Goblins and Chickens drop slayer log uniques. Therefore, you can only kill them, if your task is to obtain a unique for the "Asgarnia and Misthalin slayer collection log", OR you've obtained all of their uniques (see rule 2.E2). This time, you didn't have to level up your Slayer, but rule 9.19.1.E1 states, that you may go for any item in the dropdown, as long as you follow the rest of the rules in 9.19. This also means levelling up Slayer. The slayer rules are comprehensive, so have a look whenever you roll a slayer log task.
Complete the Stronghold of Security and the Stronghold of Safety R95M
What's RuneScape without a pair of Fancy boots? Head to the fourth floor of the Stronghold of Security to secure yourself some peak fashion attire. Don't forget the grab the cash from the first three levels of the Stronghold. Afterwards, there is more cash to score in the Stronghold of Safety near Edgeville.
What are you waiting for? Time to make some cash.
Context of "Complete the Stronghold of Security and the Stronghold of Safety" VJ2W
Now you've got some fashion and cash on your hands. Feels good, doesn't it? When your active task requires GP, you are allowed to use methods that also grant experience, such as killing monsters and alching their loot. If you just want to have cash, but your task doesn't require it, you must find ways that do not award experience. For instance, as a member, you can make a decent profit buying silks in Al-Kharid and selling them to the Silk merchant in Ardougne. Later on, we will cover a better 0-exp money maker.
Harvest a row of potatoes Y83G
Potatoes can be planted using the Farming skill. An allotment patch is located between Taverley and Burthorpe. You can obtain the seeds from Head Farmer Jones by the Farming patch. Once you have planted the seeds, you are now time-gated, as you need to wait for IRL time to pass before you can harvest the potatoes. More on this on the next task. Select "Time-gate" in the dropdown, click Complete Task and read on!
Context of "Harvest a row of potatoes" 26GK
That was your first experience doing Farming in Taskman. Farming is handled differently from all other skills. You can do Farming activities whenever you wish - as long as they only give experience in Farming. As for your potatoes and "time-gating", rule §5 states that if an active task has a time-gate (real-life time must pass), you have to complete as much of the task as you can. If you still cannot proceed, you are allowed to select the time-gate unique in the dropdown and move on. You must return to and finish it as soon as possible. Let's continue on your adventure. But don't forget the potatoes!
Reach an Agility level of 5 and unlock the 'Surge' ability EEK5
We recommend using the Burthorpe Agility course to level up your Agility for this task, but you may use the Gnome Agility or Brimhaven agility courses if you are already a member. The Surge ability is a great way to get around the world.
Context of "Reach an Agility level of 5 and unlock the 'Surge' ability" 66B4
You've just levelled up your movement capabilities. Did you know there's also an 'Escape' ability, which takes you backwards, and that these abilities can be used during combat?
Level a combat skill to the softcap of the tier and obtain a weapon upgrade QZKM
More combat. Wonderful! Before you decide how to level up your chosen stat, read footnote 7 in the rules to determine the softcap for combat skill in your tier. You must also consider whether the monster drops any items that might complete other tasks. For instance, you still have uniques left to get from goblins and chickens so those are out of the question. For this task, we suggest killing Trolls in the Burthorpe caves. Turn off shared experience to halve the time it takes to reach the level. You can buy weapon upgrades up to T40 in the shops in Varrock, the Champion's guild sells T50. So off you go to spend some GP. You can upgrade to T10 on the way to T20, if you wish.
Context of " Level a combat skill to the softcap of the tier and obtain a weapon upgrade" I DE7G
You are always allowed to buy things from shops if you can afford it. Check the RS wiki for shops that stock items you need for your task. If none does, you can kill monsters or create it yourself. When killing monsters, you cannot kill any that drop items which complete tasks. There is an exception. Look at rule 2.E2. Monsters that drop items which can complete tasks, can be killed, if the drop is equal to or rarer than 1/2000. Champion's scroll, for example drop at a 1/5000 rate, and therefore giants, ghouls, and others are decent training methods. On the next task we'll talk about creating items!
Context of " Level a combat skill to the softcap of the tier and obtain a weapon upgrade" II WREK
When you need to create an item, the required skill level must be within the softcap of your tier. There's a new word. Look at footnote 7 in the rules. We place tasks based on these caps. That means that all tasks in a tier will require between level X and level Y. For Tutorial that's between level 1 and level 20. Further information can be found under rule 6.
Cooking supply task #0: go Crayfish 8W7W
Stock up on 20 cooked crayfish. Crayfish can be caught at the Taverley Lake. When cooking, you should always use a range. Making your own fire gives avoidable firemaking experience, plus cooking on a range has a higher success rate early on. You will often have multiple methods of achieving your task or carrying out your activities, but you must choose methods in accordance with rule §2.R1 and R2. Check them out. If you hover over the "unlock" icon on the left side of your dashboard, you will see that this task allows you something new upon completion. Let's go through it on the next task.
Context of "Cooking supply task #0: go Crayfish" 56KD
Unlocks... The exceptions to the rules. The further you progress, the more unlocks you get, and the more freedom you get. You are now allowed to fish and cook up to 20 Crayfish whenever you're in need of food. Neat, ain't it?
Your free trial has ended. Get membership! MGXX
Taskman takes you through everything the game has to offer, and that includes membership content. We would love to make a purely free to play Taskman journey one day, but until then, membership is required. Already a member? Task completed.
Create 5 Attack potions (3) VJ3W
Attack potions require a Herblore level of 1, a guam and an Eye of newt to make. Guam are most easily obtained at this stage by killing adolescent white wolves on the East side of White Wolf Mountain. You can buy eyes of newt from Jatix's Herblore Shop in Taverley. Herblore training does NOT require completion of the Druidic Ritual quest. Completion of this task also has an unlock.
Did you harvest your potatoes yet? 26ZK
If you didn't already, go harvest your potatoes now. In the future, we will not be reminding you to check on your time-gated tasks. That is up to you to remember.
Obtain a Holy symbol 3678
Hold up! Before you go Mining and Crafting, do you recall the soft caps of Tutorial tier? 1-15. That means you are not allowed to level up your Crafting to craft a Holy symbol. Check the wiki link (blue RS icon) to find another way to obtain it.
Collect 6 statuettes for Xenia EEJ5
Remember how you were allowed to partially complete the Blood Pact? Now you need to fully complete it and collect the 6 Statuettes found in the Lumbridge catacombs. You can use the experience lamp as it's a one-time experience reward (rule §7.E2). Dragith Nurn is a level 26, so make sure you make use of those supplies you stocked up earlier!
Surge... straight into a wall 66M4
Surge at super speed a distance of exactly one tile, breaking your nose and probably some teeth in the process. This will trigger the completion of an achievement (though you might already have completed it!). If you have, don't worry. This task is intended to teach you a thing or two about accidentally completing tasks.
Context of "Surge... straight into a wall" 76Z2
Some activities are so obscure that you can easily avoid them (and thus avoid completing the tasks for them). Others, like the surging you have just done, happen without you meaning to do them and without knowing it was a task. This is not something you'll be disqualified by doing, as long as you don't go actively looking for 'accidental' completions.
Obtain a penguin point and score some easy cash ZV39
You obtain penguin points by spying on penguins throughout the world. You can exchange the point for cash with Larry in the Ardougne Zoo. You can find a list of all current penguins here: https://jq.world60pengs.com/ Please note that you are not allowed to complete quests to access an area a penguin resides in. The next task will cover using penguin points for experience.
Context of "Obtain a penguin point and score some easy cash" 96K2
Distractions and diversions (D&Ds) can be participated in whenever you wish, as long as they do not provide any experience other than combat experience. For instance, you can track down penguins around the world of Gielinor for Penguin points, which can be used on experience (when your active task requires you to level up a skill), in the Farming skill whenever you wish, and for coins whenever. Minigames/ D&Ds such as Pest Control, Castle Wars and Goblin Raids only award combat experience, and are therefore free to be done whenever.
Unlock the ability to claim your own island and go find Milky Joel QZ3M
Complete the Flag fall quest. Once you have completed the quest, search for a message in a bottle on far south-east end of Waiko. The message contains a map you can show to your Arc navigator, who will take you to Milky Bay. In Milky Bay, you can find Milky Joel.
Context of "Unlock the ability to claim your own island and locate a map to Milky Bay" 4GKQ
You just completed two tasks at once. Search for "Milky Joel" in the Passive tier list, you will have to manually complete the task there as well. The passive tier is where tasks that aren't always available are placed, such as Castaways of the Arc (like Milky Joel), who can only be found certain days. You can only work on passive tasks that give experience when required by your active task, or if they give no experience at all. Check out rule §3.1 for details. To progress into the next tier, a number of passives must be completed. The number is found in the rules and indicated by the red blob in the tier list at the top of the page.
Collect a bronze spear and 20 ashes from the Haunted mine without completing any quests NZ85
Ashes and a bronze spear can be obtained without gaining experience or completing quests. However, you will gain combat experience for killing the Ghoul on your way to Morytania. The Taskman Wiki (found by clicking the bass icon on your task) often holds key information we couldn't fit into the description of the task. This is such a case. The page leads you to a bronze spear. You can obtain Ashes by dropping Glowing mushrooms, found deeper within the mine. Don't go too far once you're done. The next task is in the vicinity.
Super Duper Secret Task #23 LB6N
Context of "Super Duper Secret Task #23" XY3E
WHOA! So that was your first Super Duper Secret Task, a SDST for short. These tasks are small easter egg activities, They are meant to be surprising or amusing. They are usually not particularly difficult, but if you must ask for help, mention the task by its number, and not the action you need to do. They are secret for a reason and we wish to keep them that way.
